It is Latin for “Lamb of God” (see 661) and refers to John the Baptist’s words about Jesus in John 1:29, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” Set to music and sung, it has been part of Catholic worship for centuries.
In its English form, Handel used it in his Messiah, setting it to beautiful, almost eerie, music.
