Prayer to Avoid Gossip and Slander | Daily Prayer
"A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much." — Proverbs 20:19 (NIV)
Daily Exhortation
There are several scriptures in the Bible where God warns us against backbiting and slander.
Backbiting is essentially private slander — talking negatively about a person behind their back. The Almighty hates it with a passion. In fact, in the book of Psalms, there are special curses for anyone who slanders their neighbor.
So what to do? The Bible says in Proverbs 26:20 (NIV) "Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down."
Even if you hear a rumor about someone, refuse to gossip about it to someone else. In that way, you are not supplying the wood to stoke the fire.
You would have done your part according to the Bible. With respect to others, our opening scripture commands us to avoid anyone who talks too much.
Do this. But please apply wisdom in avoiding the backbiter! If they gossip about others to you, they will gossip about you to others.
