Charles Haddon Spurgeon

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was a British Particular Baptist preacher. Spurgeon remains highly influential among Christians of various denominations, among whom he is known as the "Prince of Preachers".

Spurgeon was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more.. These are some of Charles Haddon Spurgeon's famous quotes

1. It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.

2. A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.

3. Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.

4. Sincerity makes the very least person to be of more value than the most talented hypocrite.

5. Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strength.

6. Trials teach us what we are; they dig up the soil, and let us see what we are made of.

7. A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble.

8. By perseverance the snail reached the ark.

9. Beware of no man more than of yourself; we carry our worst enemies within us.

10. The greatest enemy to human souls is the self-righteous spirit which makes men look to themselves for salvation.

11. We have come to a turning point in the road. If we turn to the right mayhap our children and our children's children will go that way; but if we turn to the left, generations yet unborn will curse our names for having been unfaithful to God and to His Word.

12. If any of you should ask me for an epitome of the Christian religion, I should say that it is in one word - prayer. Live and die without prayer, and you will pray long enough when you get to hell.

13. Saving faith is an immediate relation to Christ, accepting, receiving, resting upon Him alone, for justification, sanctification, and eternal life by virtue of God's grace.

14. Many men owe the grandeur of their lives to their tremendous difficulties.

15. I would go to the deeps a hundred times to cheer a downcast spirit. It is good for me to have been afflicted, that I might know how to speak a word in season to one that is weary.

16. Free will carried many a soul to hell, but never a soul to heaven.

17. A sinner can no more repent and believe without the Holy Spirit's aid than he can create a world.

18. No one knows who is listening, say nothing you would not wish put in the newspapers.

19. I do not think I should care to go on worshipping a Madonna even if she did wink. One cannot make much out of a wink. We want something more than that from the object of our adoration.

20. None are more unjust in their judgments of others than those who have a high opinion of themselves.

21. If I were a Roman Catholic, I should turn a heretic, in sheer desperation, because I would rather go to heaven than go to purgatory.

22. Humility is to make a right estimate of one's self.

23. No one is so miserable as the poor person who maintains the appearance of wealth.

24. The goose that lays the golden eggs likes to lay where there are eggs already.

25. I believe that nothing happens apart from divine determination and decree. We shall never be able to escape from the doctrine of divine predestination - the doctrine that God has foreordained certain people unto eternal life.

26. The Lord gets his best soldiers out of the highlands of affliction.

27. Giving is true having.

28. Of two evils, choose neither.

29. A vigorous temper is not altogether an evil. Men who are easy as an old shoe are generally of little worth.

30. You cannot make a sinner into a saint by killing him. He who does not live as a saint here will never live as a saint hereafter.

31. We are all at times unconscious prophets.

32. Must is a hard nut to crack, but it has a sweet kernel.

Charles Spurgeon
Evening by Evening is a devotional book by Charles Spurgeon, a prominent 19th-century Baptist preacher and writer. This book is a collection of 365 daily readings, each designed to encourage and inspire readers in their daily walk with God.

From my inmost soul, as God’s servant, I lay before you this warning: It is time to seek the Lord! Do not put off that work, for this may be your last call from destruction

DAILY DEVOTIONAL

Times of Seeking the Lord

Charles Spurgeon
The month of April is said to derive its name from the Latin verb aperio, which means “to open,” because all the buds and blossoms are now opening, and we have arrived at the gates of the flowery year.
Danger may find you in an hour when all seems most secure to you. Therefore, take heed to your ways, and watch unto prayer.

Vigilance on the Road: Protecting Our Holiness

Charles Spurgeon
There is a robber at every turn of the road to rob you of your jewels! There is a temptation in every mercy! There is a snare in every joy! If you ever reach heaven at last, it will be a miracle of divine grace, ascribed entirely to your Father’s power. Be on your guard!
Remember that His presence can be experienced. His promise is as true as ever.

The Blessing of the Presence of Jesus

Charles Spurgeon
He is as certainly with us now as He was with the disciples at the lake when they saw coals of fire, fish on the coals, and bread (John 21:9). Not physically, but still in real truth, Jesus is with us!
The precious blood of the Lamb slain removes the guilt and purges away the defilement of our sins of ignorance and carelessness.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL

Sanctifying Joy and Cleansing Grace

Charles Spurgeon
Amid the cheerfulness of household gatherings, it is easy to slide into sinful amusements and forget our declared character as Christians. It should not be so, but it is, that our days of feasting are very seldom days of sanctified enjoyment.
