STOCKS
There are several words used for these instruments of punishment: (a) “mahpecheth”, a wooden frame in which the feet, hands, and neck of the person suffering this punishment were imprisoned in such a way that his body was kept completely folded. Jeremiah was subjected to this punishment (Jer. 20:2, 3);
(b) “sad”, stocks in which the feet were imprisoned (Jb. 13:27; 33:11; Acts 16:24; Gr.: “xulon”); (c) “tsinoq”, stocks that imprisoned the hands and feet (Jer. 29:26); (d) “ekes”, “a chain or ankle ring” (Prov. 7:22).
