SILK

In the OT it is translated “silk” in Ez. 16:10, 13 (Heb. “meshi”).
Actually, it refers to some fine fiber such as hair or, perhaps, silk. There is only security in the single mention in the NT (Rev. 18:12, Gr. “sêrikon”).

It is produced by various species of caterpillars of the genus “bombyx”. It became known in the West after the campaigns of Alexander the Great.

“Sêrikon”, its Greek name, means “of Seres”, a people who have generally been identified with the Chinese.

The emperors of Rome dressed in silk (Wars 7:5, 4).
