GREEK

GREEK

An inhabitant of Greece, or who was of Greek race (Acts 16:1; 17:4). When the NT opposes Jews to Greeks, the term Greek generally designates a foreigner; but the Greek was considered the most developed type of Gentile (Rom. 1:14, 16; 10:12).

After Macedonia conquered the Persian Empire and other eastern lands, and founded Hellenic kingdoms in Syria and Egypt, the name “Greeks” was used, especially by the Easterners, to designate those who commonly spoke the Greek language. and who enjoyed the privileges of Greek colonists in the states governed by Alexander’s successors.

The Greeks who wanted to see Jesus (John 12:20, 21) were foreigners, but it is not certain that they were of Greek race.
