DOWRY
In ancient times it was very rare for women to provide a dowry in marriage.
In Israel and the surrounding nations, it was her husband or father who paid the father of the betrothed in order for her to be given to him in marriage (Gen. 29:15-20; 34:12; Ex. 22: 17; 1 Samuel 18:25).
The lowest legal amount appears to have been 50 shekels of silver (Deut. 22:29).
Sometimes the father of the betrothed gave her a marriage gift (Josh. 15:19; 1 Kings 9:16).
